SCIENCE FICTION

This concert program musically explores the wide range of science fiction as portrayed with cinematic means. Futuristic settings and futuristic science and technology are presented in, for example, THE MATRIX and in the ALIEN movies. Space travel, time travel and parallel universes are shown in the STAR TREK movies. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL are about extra-terrestrial life visiting earth in a peaceful mission and universal friendship across any borders. CAPRICORN ONE is an example of a government- conspiracy thriller about the Mars landing hoax. And the STAR WARS movies, finally, focus more on story and character than on scientific accuracy.

The wide range of ideas and topics is also represented by the highly diverse styles of the composers. John Williams, for example, offers lush romantic music in the style of the late-19th century, whereas composers like Don Davis and James Horner use avantgarde techniques in order to create a musical landscape that the audience may not have heard before.

The program places particular emphasis on the music of the STAR TREK movies by presenting music from the most recent movie (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, 2013) and the original movie from 1978 (STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE). From STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, this concert features a ten-minute suite that was created especially by the EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE. This suite combines the classic STAR TREK opening theme with the action-driven “March of the Klingons“ and the sweeping Ilia‘s Theme. Jerry Goldsmith‘s musical contribution to STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE was recognized with Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, and is often regarded as one of the composer‘s greatest scores.
