ASPHALT is an audacious view of the metropolis Berlin: nocturnal boulevards, neon lights, dark shadows, luxury, crime and eroticism. The film was a fantastic UFA production that was completed with immense effort in the Babelsberg studios. Director Joe May had a luxurious shopping street rebuilt in one of the largest studios in Europe. This setting for the film put mundane Berlin in scene. Join the camera as it reveals a highlight of German film production.
The film tells the story of the beautiful Else who is caught by a police officer for stealing jewels. She eludes her arrestment by seducing the policeman who succumbs to her charms. He immediately sinks into her decadent lifestyle and becomes a murderer out of jealousy. After his own father arrests him his life seems hopeless, yet love finds a solution.
