ASPHALT is an audacious view of the metropolis Berlin: nocturnal boulevards, neon lights, dark shadows, luxury, crime and eroticism. The film was a fantastic UFA production that was completed with immense effort in the Babelsberg studios. Director Joe May had a luxurious shopping street rebuilt in one of the largest studios in Europe. This setting for the film put mundane Berlin in scene. The film tells the story of the beautiful Else who is caught by a police officer for stealing jewels. She eludes her arrestment by seducing the policeman who succumbs to her charms. He immediately sinks into her decadent lifestyle and becomes a murderer out of jealousy. After his own father arrests him his life seems hopeless, yet love finds a solution.
