ANDERS ALS DIE ANDERN seems to indicate that a somewhat tolerant mood existed in Germany shortly after the First World War. This pioneering and controversial educational fiction film attacking the criminalization of homosexuality, made by Jewish director Oswald in collaboration with the famous sex-researcher Magnus Hirschfeld, defended homosexuals as decent human beings, worthy of the respect of others. ANDERS ALS DIE ANDERN proved extremely popular screening to sold-out audiences, although it was censored a few times throughout history. Long thought lost, a 40-minute fragment of the original feature-length film that had been incorporated into a 1926 documentary by Hirschfeld was discovered in a Ukrainian export copy and recently restored by the Munich Filmmuseum.
