Haunted Forest, The
(La Forêt Enchanté)
France
1928

THE HAUNTED FOREST is part of a tender picture composition that the magnificent Starewitch is playing in front of the audiences’ eyes. The naïve spectator as well as the daintily aesthete will be happy likewise. Symbol and parody remain tight together. Starewitch celebrates his triumphs with fabric, paint and creates sculptures of his configured imagination.
The music follows the same style, it succeeds Dessau in uniting soft lyrics with pert parody. Thereby he hangs to the sphere of the fairytale in every bar. For single phrases of the composition he finds, despite the sententiousness and consistency of his chamber orchestral expression, a surprisingly plenitude of nuances.

THE HAUNTED FOREST is connected to the framework plot of the THE MAGIC CLOCK. As in the story of the princess another brave young man fights against the black knight and when he also seems to be beaten, the girl who creates the dolls in „real life“ intervenes in setting the magic clock forward and the fairytale world stiffens immediately and so she can save the young mans’ life. When the girl goes to bed, she falls asleep quickly. In her dreams the little girl walks through the haunted forest and meets speaking tress and little trolls with whom she has exciting adventures.
