Saison 2009 / 2010

The EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE is very excited about the stunning reaction and the broad national and international media coverage caused by the world premiere of METROPOLIS 27/10 on February 12, 2010.

The film concert becomes a popular format for gala events at international festivals.

The ballet film ROMEO AND JULIET (USSR 1954, music by Sergei Prokofiev), EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE’s own production, travels to Novosibirsk. On the occasion of the opening of the Sibstancija festival and of the Goethe Institute in Novosibirsk, Frank Strobel conducts the Novosibirsk opera orchestra in a sold-out opera hall. The performance is covered extensively in the German press.

Posthumous encounter between Shostakovich and Sergei Eisenstein. Frank Strobel adapts the symphonies to the film for the final restoration of BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (USSR 1922). NDR Radiophilharmonie performs the highly-regarded premiere; the production is subsequently taken on by the Sydney Symphony orchestra. Further performances take place in Mulhouse and Helsinki.

Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie, Staatskapelle Weimar and Nürnberger Symphoniker, all of which are part of FILMPHILHARMONIC’s orchestra association, record the film music to POPE JOAN (DIE PÄPSTIN, GER 2009), LAURAS STERN UND DER DRACHE NIANG (GER 2009) and the TV blockbuster VOLCANO (DER VULKAN). The film music to POPE JOAN receives the German Record Critics’ Award (Q 1 film music) in 2010

The EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE’s orchestra association is contracted to record its first international film music production: EMPIRE OF SILVER (Taiwan, USA, Japan, 2009). The contract is performed by the Hamburger Symphoniker. Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock records the film music to BUDDENBROOKS (GER 2008) by Hans Peter Ströer – the film production of the year.

DER ROSENKAVALIER (A 1926, music by Richard Strauss) is performed at international locations: Den Haag, Vienna, Liverpool, Paris, Oslo, Houston, Berlin, Zurich, Goteborg

The season closes with a performance of ALEXANDER NEVSKY (USSR 1938, music by Sergei Prokofiev) at the Bregenz Festival.

Saison 2006 / 2007

The KlassikRadio tour entitled DIE GROßE WELT DER FILMMUSIK presents film music concerts to ever larger audiences. Together with the Hamburger Symphoniker conducted by Frank Strobel, EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE produces an almost sold-out tour including twelve performances in ten cities, with concerts at the Berliner Philharmonie, Munich’s Herkulessaal, Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt, Laeiszhalle Hamburg.

In March 2007, after a four-year development period, the scenic film music concert GRÜN IST DIE HEIMAT (THE GREEN GRASS OF HOME), directed by Peter Lund who also wrote the lyrics, has its premiere at Admiralspalast in Berlin. The concert, which is sponsored by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds, brings a new presentation format to the concert hall. Performed by Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg, the film music concert explores not only the concept of ‘Heimat’ but also German film and music history. Three actors connect the different music pieces on the scenic and the dramaturgic level. A further performance takes place at the 2009 Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

Saison 2005 / 2006

Saison 2005 / 2006

EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE celebrates its 5th anniversary with the publication of its anniversary brochure, presenting both a summary of the company’s development so far and its flagship projects.

Further long-term collaboration commences with Theater Erfurt (Festival on the Cathedral Steps) and Theater Aachen. At the international level, EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE maintains close ties with the Thessaloniki State Orchestra, the Goethe Institut in Sao Paulo, the Icleand Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Filharmonien.

In February 2006, EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE celebrates the premiere of its first independent production. The company produces ROMEO AND JULIET (USSR 1954, director: Lev Arnsthem, music: Sergei Prokofiev) as a ballet film concert on behalf of the Hamburger Symphoniker. Thanks to this production, audiences can still enjoy the fascinating performance of Galina Ulanova, the ‘premiere ballerina’, today.

Saison 2004 / 2005

Saison 2004 / 2005

The success of ALEXANDER NEVSKY in Berlin leads to an invitation to the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow. As a beacon project of the 2004 German-Russian Year of Culture, the production, performed by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester under Frank Strobel, travels to Moscow along with the sound and cinema technology. The project is implemented in cooperation with the Goethe Institut Moscow and sponsored by the Kulturstiftung.

In May 2005, on the occasion of the Week of German and Chinese Culture, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz conducted by Frank Strobel takes METROPOLIS, the film concert (music by Bernd Schultheis), to Shanghai. They are accompanied by the EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE’s cinema technology equipment and the production team.

Saison 2003 / 2004

Saison 2003 / 2004

The premiere of ALEXANDER NEVSKY (Sergei Eisenstein, music: Sergei Prokofiev) once again proves the value of EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE’s partnerships with ZDF/ARTE, DeutschlandRadio Kultur and Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Germany‘s first sound film concert is performed at the Konzerthaus Berlin.

Having unsuccessfully organised two performances of THE GOLD RUSH in Lübeck, EUROPEAN FILMPHILHARMONIC INSTITUTE gives up its plan of establishing itself as an organiser for film music concerts. Instead, the company consolidates its previous strategy of becoming an international film music partner for symphonic orchestras and offering concepts and productions for film concerts and film music concerts as editor. This includes the development of ideas for new productions and the placing of existing film music productions for further performances.
